South Slope Derby

Each year, the KoKo Soap Box Workshops encourage children to think outside the box. Children plan their inventions using sketches and calculations, bringing them to life with found and recycled objects as well as building materials. Over the course of the workshop, participants turn piles of seemingly useless trash into functional machines while learning about construction and design and, more importantly, having fun. Leading up to the race, kids test drive their gravity racers, ensuring the safety and functionality of each invention. At the South Slope Derby participants get to race their cars for real as friends, families, and neighbors cheer them on as they race down the 17th Street.

The South Slope Derby has received rave reviews from publications such as the New York TimesBrooklyn PaperNew York Daily NewsDNAinfo and many more!

Judges for the South Slope Derby vary each year and include Council Members, local business owners, STEAM professionals, and neighbors. Local businesses are also present to provide food and refreshments.

Happening now at Open Source:

PRECIPITATE , a project by SCOPE

June 29 – July 30, 2023
Opening Reception: June 29th, 7-9pm at Open Source Gallery (306 17th St. Brooklyn, NY)

What is Precipitate?
Precipitate is a project by SCOPE whose exhibit at Open Source will feature photography, jars of sediment from the Gowanus Canal, and a sculptural representation of the Canal made out of waste from the construction industry.

What is SCOPE?
SCOPE is a collective of artists and scientists who care deeply for the environment.

What is Precipitate about?
Precipitate centers around the microorganisms living in contaminated sediment of the Gowanus Canal. Have you ever been to the Gowanus Canal?

What are microorganisms?
Microorganisms are really tiny life forms which are too small for people to see without the help of a microscope. Some examples of microorganisms are bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

How did the Gowanus Canal become contaminated?
The Gowanus Canal started off as a creek and was built into a canal 1853 to transport goods and materials. But many industries that were located alongside the canal used it as a dumping ground for waste. This caused the Canal to accumulate contaminated sediment and become polluted. What do you know about pollution?
