In this workshop, specifically designed for kids ages 5-7, kids engage in hands-on material exploration and building activities. Using our outdoor workspace, local community, and recycled and found objects as inspiration, our Teaching Artists bring in project themes that work with kids imagination and allow them to to build based on their creative interpretation of the theme.

Allowing young children the opportunity to take controlled risks in a safe, encouraging environment has been shown to increase a child’s confidence, leadership, and innovation skills, as well as a sense of pride in their accomplishments. Our teaching artists bring years of experience in self-directed, play-based learning to encourage kids to take healthy, managed risks and try new experiences while avoiding hazards.

Our most popular workshop has been going strong since 2007!

In the Soap Box Workshop, kids turn found objects and recycled materials into fully functioning gravity racers. Throughout the week-long workshop kids learn engineering skills and get to express their natural ingenuity in building their car. Together, with our Teaching Artists and teen counselors, kids learn to design the functional elements of the car such as steering and brakes while also incorporating imaginative designs. Who’s to say a car can’t also be a butterfly? Leading up to the race, kids test drive their derby cars, ensuring the safety and functionality of each invention. At the end of each week, we host a “mini derby” where the kids celebrate a successful week by racing their cars down 20th street.

At the annual South Slope Derby, participants get to race their cars for real as friends, families, and neighbors cheer them on. This year’s South Slope Derby will be held on Saturday, August 26th 2023!
